Robert Bailey

Robert Bailey was born on 5 February 1901, at 3 Helmet Street, Ancoats, Manchester, the son of Joseph and Alice Bailey, formerly Ratcliffe.  Joseph’s occupation at the time was Warehouse man (Provision), and Robert’s birth was registered on 23 March 1901. We took this photograph of Helmet Street in 2004.

Robert married Pasqualina (otherwise known as Lily) De Felice on 4 November 1922 at St Michael’s Catholic Church, in the district of Manchester.  Robert was 21, and Lily was 23.  Robert’s occupation is shown as Carrier’s Carter, no occupation is shown for Lily.  Robert’s father is shown as Joseph Bailey, occupation Warehouse man, of 54 Ainsworth Street, Ardwick, Manchester.  Lily’s father is shown as Dominick De Felice, occupation Biscuit Maker, of 47 Jersey Street, Ancoats, Manchester.  The witnesses are shown as Henry Faulkener and Mary Meyrick.

This is a certificate awarded to Robert by his employers in recognition of his care for the horses, possibly in relation to a May Day parade in Manchester.  This was sent to us by one of Robert’s daughters.

Robert died on 18 December 1965 at 29 Sherwood Street, Collyhurst, Manchester, at the age of 64.  His occupation is shown as Porter.  The cause of death is recorded as Ia Bronchopneumonia, b influenza, II Bronchitis and emphysema, certified by HA Koretz, MB.  The informant is recorded as daughter in attendance, and the death was registered on 20 December 1965.
